Speech Therapy Assessments

Understanding your child's communication

Where every journey begins...

At The Speech Spot, every great outcome starts with a great assessment. Whether you've noticed your toddler isn't talking as much as other children their age, your preschooler is hard to understand, or your school-age child is struggling with reading, writing, or social communication - a thorough speech pathology assessment is the essential first step.

Our experienced speech pathologists in Bella Vista provide comprehensive, evidence-based assessments for children from toddlers right through to the end of high school. We make the process warm, relaxed, and child-centred - because when children feel comfortable, we see their true abilities.

What is a Speech Pathology assessment?

A speech pathology assessment is a detailed evaluation carried out by a qualified speech pathologist to understand how your child communicates. It looks at what your child can do well, identifies any areas of difficulty, and helps us design a therapy plan that's tailored specifically to them.

Assessments at The Speech Spot are never a one-size-fits-all checklist. We take the time to listen to your concerns, observe your child in a natural and supportive environment, and use a combination of standardised tools and clinical observation to build a complete picture.

Who should be assessed?

You may want to book a speech pathology assessment if your child:

Is a toddler (12–36 months) who isn't meeting speech and language milestones

Is a preschooler (3–5 years) who is difficult to understand or has limited vocabulary

Is preparing to start school and you'd like to check their communication readiness

Has been recommended for assessment by a childcare educator, teacher, or GP

Is a school-aged child struggling with reading, spelling, writing, or following instructions

Is a teenager experiencing difficulties with social communication or literacy

Has received an autism, ADHD, or developmental delay diagnosis and needs support

Requires a diagnostic report for NDIS access, funding review, or school support planning

Types of assessments we offer:

Every child develops at their own pace, though some signs may suggest extra support could help. You might consider preschool speech therapy services if your child:

Speech Sound Assessment (Articulation & Phonology)

We assess how clearly your child produces sounds and words. This is relevant for toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children who are hard to understand, leave off sounds, substitute sounds. We assess your child to determine whether their speech sounds are developing age appropriately, or whether speech therapy is recommended.

Language Assessment (Expressive & Receptive Language)

Language is more than just talking - it's also about understanding. Our language assessments evaluate:

  • Expressive language - how your child puts words and sentences together, tells stories, and expresses ideas

  • Receptive language - how well your child understands what is said to them, follows instructions, and processes information

This type of assessment is particularly valuable for toddlers with limited words, children with delayed language development, and school-age children who struggle to follow classroom instructions or express themselves clearly.

Literacy Assessment (Reading & Writing)

For preschool, school-age children and teenagers, we offer literacy assessments that evaluate phonological awareness (the building blocks of reading), decoding, reading fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, and written expression.

Social Communication & Pragmatic Language Assessment

Some children communicate in ways that are different from what is typically expected in social situations. This might include differences in how they start or join conversations, stay on a topic, interpret humour or sarcasm, or notice and respond to social cues.

Our social communication assessments explore each child’s unique communication style, strengths, and areas where support may be helpful. They are particularly relevant for children with neurodivergent profiles, including those on the autism spectrum or those who experience differences in social interaction.

Assessment across every age group

Toddlers (1–3 years) Early identification makes a world of difference. If your toddler has limited words, isn't combining words by age two, or you're worried about their language development, an early assessment can give you answers and a clear path forward.

Preschool & Early Learning (3–5 years) The preschool years are critical for building the language foundations children need for school. We assess speech clarity, vocabulary, sentence structure, listening skills, and early literacy readiness - working closely with families and early childhood educators.

Primary School Age (5–12 years) School places significant demands on a child's communication skills. Our assessments for primary-age children can cover reading, writing, spoken language, social communication, and classroom participation - giving families and teachers the information they need to provide the right support.

High School & Adolescents (13–18 years) Teenagers aren't too old for speech therapy. We assess and support older students with literacy difficulties, social communication needs and the complex language demands of senior schooling and everyday life.
