Language Delay In Children

Watching your child find their voice is one of parenting's great joys, so it's natural to feel a flicker of worry if their words aren't coming as easily or as soon as you'd expect. Many Hills District families ask us the same question: is this just a normal stage, or does my child need extra support? At The Speech Spot, we help parents get a clear answer and provide a practical plan of action.

What is a language delay?

A language delay occurs when a child's understanding and/or use of language develops more slowly than expected for their age. It's different from a speech sound difficulty, which affects how clearly a child produces speech. A language delay affects the words a child uses, how they put words together into sentences (grammar), and how they understand and communicate meaning. Language delays are generally described as either receptive language delays, expressive language delays, or a combination of both.

Language Delay and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

Many young children are described as having a language delay because their language skills are developing more slowly than expected for their age. Some children catch up to their peers over time, particularly with the right support. However, for others, language difficulties persist as they grow. When these ongoing difficulties have a significant impact on everyday communication, learning and social interactions, a speech pathologist may diagnose Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Not every child with a language delay will have DLD, but early assessment and intervention are important to help identify children who need additional support and to give every child the best opportunity to develop their communication skills.

Signs your toddler or child may have language difficulties

Every child develops language at their own pace, but there are some signs that may indicate a child is finding language more difficult than expected for their age.

Limited vocabulary compared to peers, or slow growth in new words

You or other caregivers have a hard time understanding your child's speech.

Not yet combining words into simple phrases around age 2 (e.g., “more milk”, “mummy go”)

Relying more on pointing, gestures, or behaviour rather than spoken words

Difficulty understanding or following simple, age-appropriate instructions such as “get your shoes”

Difficulty answering simple questions or taking part in early back-and-forth interactions

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Language delay is one of the most common reasons Sydney families seek support from a speech pathologist in early childhood. Early assessment, identification and support can make a meaningful difference to a child’s communication development.

Why early support makes a difference

The early years are a period of rapid brain development, particularly for speech and language skills. While some children who are “late talkers” do catch up over time, it is not always possible to predict which children will and will not need ongoing support. Because of this, early assessment and intervention can help identify whether a child would benefit from support sooner rather than later. As highlighted by the Raising Children Network, seeking professional advice early can help families make informed decisions and feel more confident about the next steps, rather than relying on a “wait and see” approach alone.

How The Speech Spot supports children with language delays

We begin with a comprehensive, play-based assessment to understand your child’s strengths and areas of difficulty. This helps us develop an individualised therapy plan that reflects your child’s interests, personality, and everyday environments. Each child’s plan is tailored to their specific needs, with goals that are meaningful and functional for daily communication.

Sessions are available at our Bella Vista clinic, through mobile visits to your home, daycare or school, or via telehealth. We also work closely with parents and caregivers between sessions, sharing practical strategies that can be used in everyday routines such as play, meals, shopping, and bath time. Babies and toddlers may also benefit from our early intervention speech therapy services.

We proudly support families across Bella Vista, Castle Hill, Kellyville, Baulkham Hills, Norwest and the wider Hills District.
