Speech and language development is an important part of a child’s overall growth. While every child develops at their own pace, most follow a general sequence of milestones as they learn to understand language, express themselves, and communicate with others.
Milestones are not strict rules, but they provide useful guidelines for typical patterns of speech and language growth. Understanding what to expect at different ages helps parents celebrate achievements, spot potential delays early, and provide the right support and encouragement along the way.
Key milestones to watch for include:
6 months: Cooing, babbling, responding to sounds, and showing interest in interaction.
9 months: Babbling with consonant sounds, recognising their name, using gestures like reaching or waving, and participating in turn-taking games.
12 months: First words, understanding simple instructions, and responding to familiar words or questions.
18 months: Rapid vocabulary growth, using two-word phrases, and following simple directions.
2 years: Combining multiple words into short sentences, understanding more complex instructions, and using gestures or pointing to communicate needs.
3-4 years: Speaking in longer sentences, telling simple stories, understanding concepts like “under” or “next to,” and expressing ideas clearly.
4-5 years: Clear speech understandable by strangers most of the time, asking and answering questions, and using language for different purposes such as explaining, describing, or requesting.
By observing these milestones, parents can get a clear picture of their child’s speech and language development and support them appropriately.
Supporting your child’s development
Parents play a vital role in encouraging speech and language growth. Simple everyday activities, like talking about daily routines, reading together, singing songs, and describing actions during play, can significantly boost communication skills. Consistency, patience, and celebrating small achievements help children feel confident while they develop!
The importance of early support
With early intervention and the right support, children can make great progress in their speech and language development. If you’re concerned about your child’s speech or language development, don’t wait to seek help.
