Why a hearing test is often recommended before speech therapy

When a child is referred for speech pathology services, parents are sometimes surprised when the first recommendation is a hearing test. However, hearing plays a foundational role in speech and language development — and ruling out hearing concerns is an essential first step before commencing therapy.

Why hearing matters for Speech & Language

Children learn to talk by hearing speech. Even mild or fluctuating hearing loss can impact:

  1. Speech sound development

  2. Vocabulary growth

  3. Sentence structure

  4. Listening and attention skills

If a child isn’t hearing speech sounds clearly or consistently, learning to produce them accurately becomes much harder.

Hearing loss isn’t always obvious

Many children with hearing difficulties still respond to sounds, follow instructions, or appear to hear “well enough.” However, issues such as:

  1. Glue ear

  2. Recurrent ear infections

  3. Mild or high-frequency hearing loss

can affect how clearly speech sounds are perceived — especially in noisy environments like classrooms.

Why Speech Pathologists recommend hearing tests

A hearing assessment helps ensure that:

  1. Therapy targets are appropriate

  2. Progress isn’t being limited by an undetected hearing issue

  3. Intervention plans are tailored accurately

  4. Time and resources are used effectively

If a hearing concern is identified, addressing it first often leads to faster and more meaningful therapy outcomes.

What happens if hearing loss is identified?

If a hearing issue is detected, your child may be referred to an audiologist, GP, or ENT specialist for further management. Once hearing is optimised, speech therapy can begin — or continue — with a clearer understanding of your child’s needs.
